Thanks again to everyone who came out for the October meeting! Here are the meeting minutes and the gaming grant requests for 2020/21.
Please join us again for the next meeting on November 12, which will include voting on the disbursement of gaming grant funds. A link to register for the meeting on Zoom will be posted in advance of the meeting date. Vancouver DPAC will be hosting a presentation on supporting your child's mental health during COVID. A panel of students will speak on their experiences dealing with increased mental health issues during the pandemic. They will be joined by Alexandra Wilson, SACY, and Paula Foran, District Area Counsellor, who will provide input on what we can do to support our children.
The session will be held as the DPAC's General Meeting on October 22 at 7 pm, via Zoom. Register here for the meeting. For other resources on children & youth and mental health, check out Kelty Mental Health's Parenting During COVID-19 and FamilySmart's latest video on parenting when our kids can't go to school. The Tupper Counselling team is providing information to grade 11 & 12 students on post-secondary planning on an ongoing basis. Grade 12 students also have access via Microsoft Teams to information on applying to programs, deadlines, scholarships, and more. Parents looking for more information can check out the Tupper Counselling website for links to post-secondary institutions and a lot of information on available scholarships, including this list Ms Ellis has put together.
Another good resource for both parents & students is EducationPlannerBC. This site takes students through every step of the process, from finding programs to applying to financing. They've also got a helpful section on COVID-19, with links to what's happening at different colleges and universities, information on ITA trades & apprenticeship training during the pandemic, etc. As with everything else, post-secondary planning looks different at the moment with no in-person events. Fortunately most of the same information is accessible online, but this year it will take a little more time and effort for students when they may already be feeling overwhelmed. Encourage your student to reach out to Tupper's Counselling team for support if they need it! Since we've had our first school exposure notices this week, it's a good time to take another look at the details on what these notices mean and how exposures in schools are handled. Vancouver Coastal Health has a dedicated page for exposures in schools. Once published there, notices will also include the date(s) the exposure occurred. It's important to note that Public Health will contact you directly in case of a school exposure involving your child. Here's some more information on school exposures from their website: There is also an extremely detailed FAQ on the BCCDC's Schools page, which covers things like who should stay home even if they are not sick, what about seasonal allergy symptoms, and what the notification process for cases in schools is like. It's worth the time to take a look at both these sites - and pass them on to other parents who have questions. The next PAC virtual meeting will be on Thursday, October 8 at 7 pm. To attend the meeting, you'll need to register in advance and then follow the instructions you receive by email. Please try to join a few minutes prior to the meeting start time, and when you join the meeting be sure to mute your microphone.
The main topic of this meeting will be discussion of gaming grant funding requests from teachers & the administration. We will also be accepting nominations for the Chair position for this school year. Click here for the full meeting agenda.
