From the Student Council:
At Sir Charles Tupper we focus on helping those in need within our community no matter the magnitude, whenever we can, and as much as we can. Our school will be participating in a district wide fundraising event known as the Canley Cup, which is also a district wide competition between all 18 public high schools. The objective is to raise the most money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank – to help families, and the less fortunate during the holiday season. In previous years we have had great success, achieving first place in 2013, and often placing within the top 3 other years. This year, our school’s objective is not to focus on winning this competition, but rather bring the community together to lend a helping hand to our fellow neighbors. We will be donating all our proceeds to local Tupper families who are in need of our community's help this holiday season. You may donate by, sending money with your child to school which they can donate during their block A class, or online through our GoFundMe Page. https://www.gofundme.com/canleycup We kindly ask for your help, and would greatly appreciate it if you could contribute any amount to our fundraiser.

Please find below a note from Mr. Russ Evans.
So proud of these girls. Here is the blurb from the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum. CAF is the National voice for apprenticeship training in Canada influencing Pan-Canadian Apprenticeship Strategies. “On November 9th, the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum brought 100 high school students together for a national youth employment conference in Ottawa to talk about skilled trades and technology careers. At Youth + Jobs = Better Future, two apprentices from the Tupper Tech program at Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School in Vancouver, BC joined WorldSkills Team Canada 2017 and acted as ambassadors to the students. Riley McBride and Lydia Terry shared their experiences as two of the four on an apprentice panel, helped facilitate discussions, and provided career inspiration to the group.” {As an added note: The participants for this forum were required to write a 2-5000 word application essay and pay their own way if accepted. As 2/4 of the panel members, Riley and Lydia had personal invitations and an all expense paid trip to Ottawa. Aside from their regular duties as ambassadors they also had time to speak with the federal minister for youth.} “Through discussion, students from diverse backgrounds answered questions that will help inform policies and programs to help them find employment, better understand all career options and talk about skilled trades careers with their parents, teachers and friends. This feedback is being collected into a youth-driven employment strategy that the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum will share with government, educators and other apprenticeship stakeholders.” From the PAC: Congratulations ladies! We're so proud of you. Thanks to Bonny Burnell for these updates on the great things some of our Tupper students are doing! Nika Asgari, our new student President, participated in the United Nations Speaking Contest in February, and tied for top points; however, the judges eventually decided to give first option to the other speaker to take the free trip on offer. As it turned out, the other speaker couldn't make it, so Nika is off to New York in July for her free trip to the United Nations. Zachary Goldthorpe will be following up his top 5 debater status at the World Scholar's Cup here in Vancouver with a trip to Athens for the finale of World Scholar's Cup for the whole world. As the rest of his team from Vancouver couldn't make it, he has been placed on a team with with two keen scholars from Israel. It should be an amazing experience. |
