Hello! Welcome to what promises to be an exciting school year full of changes and possible challenges. With the change in government and a new VSB Board of Trustees about to be voted in, we all must work together to make our voices heard in order to have the educational needs of our children met. DPAC is the Vancouver District Parent Advisory Committee. All of the executive members are nominated by school PACs and voted in. The main role of DPAC is to act as the liaison between all PACs and the Vancouver School Board. In this capacity, I will be your school's DPAC liaison for the upcoming year. I have spent the past 15 years as a PAC executive, with the past 3 years as the PAC Chair at John Oliver Secondary. I am available to answer any questions you might have about DPAC or school board issues, and to pass on your concerns or questions to either DPAC or the VSB. There are a number of important upcoming events that members of your PAC might be interested in attending: The DPAC Executive Meeting on September 14 at 7pm - all parents are welcome to attend. The General Meeting on September 28th at 7pm - all parents and PAC members are welcome to attend and DPAC representatives are particularly welcome to come and report back to their schools. The All Candidates Forum (where nominated school board Trustees will discuss their platforms and answer questions) on October 3 at 7pm. All meetings are held at the Vancouver School Board located at 1580 West Broadway. There will be an election of new VSB Trustees on October 14th, so please take the time to answer the survey that was sent to all schools, and please take the time to vote. For more information on DPAC and the upcoming events, please take a look at our website vancouverdpac.org. Kind Regards, Anne Montgomery, DPAC Officer

"Wanted to give everyone a quick update on Tupper Basketball as we move into a new year at school and a new season of basketball. I am sure that you are all aware that our grade 8, 9 & 10 boys have only lost 1 game in Vancouver play in the last 6 seasons. Our grade 8’s finished 11th in the province, our grade 9’s 7th and our juniors 2nd. Our incoming grade 8’s are favored pre-season to win the city championship as are the other 3 boys teams. The senior team is ranked #8 in the province pre-seaon. We received our new scorers table and the “Hall of Fame” benches which combined with our new floor we are the crown jewel of facilitates for Vancouver High School Basketball. All of this new equipment was purchased with funds raised by the boys themselves and in addition the boys basketball teams pledged 20% of all funds raised to the “Best Buddies” program and presented the students there with a check for over $2000.00. It is our intention to do the same this coming school year with all funds raised by the teams. This past summer we ran free basketball camps for 5 weeks. The camps were run by Tupper Hall of Famers, Patrick Cumaual, Ivan Yaco, Warren Liang and Tupper teacher Jordan McAlpine. All of these outstanding coaches taught free of charge and donated all their time at the camp which the students were offered for free, both genders, all grades and any school in Vancouver. Some days 40 attended - some days 8 students but an amazing gift to the city none the less. Very, very pleased. There were not only Tupper students but schools represented were Killarney, Van Tech, Churchill, Lord Byng, Brit, David Thompson and Gladstone throughout the summer. Alumni continuing on playing in the next level see’s Cameron Smythe our All-Canadian going into his 5th and final year at Carleton hoping to win his 5th straight Canadian Championship. Hall of Famer Warren Liang is going into his 5th year at Dalhousie University and hoping to expand on his back to back Atlantic championships as well as the teams 3rd place finish at Nationals. Hall of Famer Daniel Kim is taking a year off from medical school as he accepted a ASAN ACADEMY Fellowship which is supported & sponsored in full by Hyundai. Daniel will spend 6 months in Seoul Korea studying Korea’s foreign policy and then he will be stationed somewhere in the U.S. for the remaining 6 months. Looking forward to the new year and so proud of all these young men." Jeff Gourley Head of Basketball Operations Sir Charles Tupper Tigers |
