Order forms for the Tupper Music Department's gift card fundraiser must be in by Wednesday, December 4th. Remember, ordering a grocery gift card is a great way to support Tupper students in need, as well as help out our music department. All the details and order forms can be found in this post. Thanks for your support!

Please help some of the most vulnerable families in our school by donating grocery gift cards to the counselling department in increments of $25. Deliver all donations to the school designated for "counselling department."
If you want to level up your donation, order them from the Tupper Music Department which is currently holding a gift card fundraiser. This way, 2 students benefit. Win-win! HOW?
Either way, please make sure your contact information is clear on the form. The deadline for the music gift card fundraiser is December 4. Gift Card Orders Pickup is Monday, Dec 16th at the Winter Concert (6:30pm). Winter concert attendance is appreciated but isn't required. After picking up your order, please deliver donations to the office labelled "counselling department". ** Important details about pick-up: If you cannot pick up your order that night and you are ONLY placing an order for the counselling department, please write PAC in the line for who is picking up your order. If you are ordering for yourself as well, you must arrange for someone to pick up your order and then deliver the donations to the office. Background and more information about the gift card drive: At our last meeting, the PAC voted on Gaming Grant distribution after facing the largest disparity to-date between the amount requested and the amount received in the grant. One of the requests we were not able to fund was for grocery gift cards and other support for essentials that can be given to students in need at the discretion of the counselling team. By happy coincidence, the Tupper Music Department is currently selling gift cards for their annual fundraiser which means you can help 2 students for the same price! Here are the specific requests from the Counselling Department - I will list them all, in case you're able to meet other needs:
Thank you for your support! As most parents are aware, teachers are currently without a collective agreement and negotiations between the BCTF and the provincial government are ongoing. Teachers are asking for support from parents and the public, and would appreciate people contacting their MLAs to express support for improved funding for education in BC. A sample letter has been provided for any parents who wish to write to their MLA. You can find your MLA's name and contact information on this website.
More information about the funding of education in BC compared to other provinces can be found here. Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre is running a series of podcasts that will be of interest to many high school parents. Topics covered so far include promoting resiliency, ADHD basics, supporting kids at home & school, and tackling anxiety. The podcast hosts are from the BC Children's Health Literacy Team, and guests include child psychiatrists, parents, and counsellors.
You can find all of the episodes that have aired so far here: https://keltymentalhealth.ca/podcast . More resources and information for parents about mental health, navigating the health care system and substance use can be found here. **Update - the hearing before the Board of Variance has been postponed until January 14, 2020.**
Our PAC was recently notified that a proposed cannabis retail store is seeking a variance to the City of Vancouver bylaw (Sec 11.6.2) that prohibits cannabis outlets from operating within 300m of the nearest property line of a school. The company is seeking relaxation of that rule as their proposed location is 280m from Tupper's grounds. A copy of the company's appeal was obtained by the PAC and can be found here. The specific references to the location of the store in relation to Tupper can be found on pages 14 and 25. At the November PAC meeting, a motion was carried in support of sending a letter to the Board of Variance expressing the PAC's opposition to a variance being granted. If any Tupper parents or community members wish to express views about this request for a variance to the 300m rule, emails can be sent to [email protected] . The hearing of this request is on Tuesday, November 19 at 2:15 pm at City Hall, so any written feedback to the Board of Variance would need to be made prior to that date. Please join us on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 pm in the staff lounge for our next meeting. We will be voting to move forward with one of four proposed funding models for disbursement of this year's Gaming Grant funds. If you are planning on attending, here are some things you may want to review before the meeting:
Meeting Agenda Gaming Grant Proposals and Treasurer's Memo The minutes from October's meeting can be found here. Remember, if you're a Tupper parent or guardian, you are a member of the PAC! We'd love to have you join us for this meeting. If you are new to the school, the easiest way to find the staff lounge is to come in the main doors off East 24th. Turn right down the hallway and the staff lounge is immediately on your right. We've all heard the saying... "Little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems." Teens & the high school years can definitely present us with some bigger problems - and wider societal issues - than we faced as elementary school parents. Here are some good information sessions coming up to help us with handling some of these "bigger" problems.
