Canadian Universities Event (CUE) BC brings public universities from across Canada to visit high schools in British Columbia. There's one public event in the lower mainland this year, it's open to both students and parents, and it's free!
When: Tuesday, October 8 from 6 to 8:30 pm Where: Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre, 4331 Dominion Street, Burnaby Visit the CUE BC website for more details, including a list of participating universities, and to register online. For students (or parents) who want to find out about all the different post-secondary options that are out there, EducationPlannerBC is a fantastic resource. Trades training, apprenticeships, universities, colleges, career profiles ... it's all there! The section on the cost of education is really useful as well, with budgets, tips on saving money, and links to information on student loans, scholarships, and bursaries available to BC students. (One tiny flaw with this great site - it's glitchy on Android Chrome. So if you're having trouble with it on your phone, try Firefox - but you may need to use a PC instead.) Happy planning!

The event is free and open to the public. Learn more, view the attending schools, and pre-register here: https://www.nacacfairs.org/vancouver I know your Grade 10 and 11 students are asking questions about the courses they need to gain admission. Let me reassure you that UBC’s general admission requirements and the degree-specific prerequisites have not, and will not, change. For BC students, you can find this information on the following webpages:
What will change?Starting in 2019, UBC is changing how we evaluate applicants for admission. Please use the following guidelines to help your Grade 10 and 11 students plan for and select their courses. 1. Students must still meet UBC's general and degree-specific admission requirements
2. Students should still focus on their achievements beyond academicsThe Personal Profile continues to be a very important part of UBC’s online application. It helps UBC assess students’ preparedness for university study based on a broad range of experiences and achievements. 3. Students should consider UBC’s holistic approach to assessing secondary school coursework Starting in 2019, UBC will no longer calculate a four-course average based on an approved Grade 12 courses list. UBC will take a holistic approach to academic assessments and will consider all Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses when evaluating the competitiveness of a student’s application – and emphasis will be placed on academic courses related to their intended area of study. UBC’s holistic approach will focus primarily on marks in academic courses, but will also consider breadth, rigour, and relevancy of coursework:
Why is UBC taking this holistic approach? The recognition of breadth, rigour, and relevancy of coursework is not an admission requirement, nor should it encourage students to dramatically alter their high school course selection. The purpose is to recognize that grades are not the only way to demonstrate readiness for post-secondary studies. While many applicants in 2019 will get offers of admission to UBC through an academic assessment based primarily on grades in academic courses, it may be advantageous (though not required) to demonstrate breadth, rigour, and relevancy in secondary school coursework. Find out more on UBC’s websitesYour students can find information about these changes on the planning for 2019 admission to UBC webpage. UBC's Academic Calendar has not yet been updated with information about our new holistic approach to academic assessments. It will be updated in late March. In the meantime, you can visit the counsellor events page to download a ready-to-use presentation for you to use in your planning sessions with your students, and a document that provides an in-depth overview of the new admission process.
