UBC Computer Science is partnering with a number of local tech companies to put together a series of tech-related activities for high school girls. Coming up very soon is the Technovation Challenge (http://www.technovationchallenge.org/), a coding and entrepreneurship challenge where small teams of up to 5 girls identify problems they want to solve, design a plan and an app, pitch the plan and build the app!
To do this, groups will be paired with both business and technical mentors which we will source from industry professionals and undergraduate students from UBC to help guide the teams through a well-outlined curriculum. It’s a fantastic opportunity to develop skills within a group of friends or classmates and develop skills over the competition period. The team formation deadline is on Dec 15th, and the curriculum runs until the delivery date of April 25th. It is expected that teams will meet on an ongoing basis in-person with their mentors on most occasions to facilitate the learning and mentoring process. This will mark the second year that UBC CS and Tasktop are working together to mentor girls for Technovation. Last year we had a very successful initial participation in this challenge with two of the teams winning their category - one of which won $5000 after attending the finals! We’re asking for any parents or interested girls to mobilize, read about the challenge and email [email protected] with names and contact information of your team members by Dec 15 so that we can make sure that every registered team has the pair of mentors to make their participation a success! Currently we have a limited supply of mentors so we are asking for teams of committed parents and high-school girls. The main requirements are a parent/coach to lead your team, and a time commitment of ~50 hours (2-4hrs per week) leading up to the April date. We will be giving priority to teams comprised of girls from grades 8 to 10. Some important dates you should be aware of are:
Charles Tupper & Charles Dickens PACs are hosting a screening of the acclaimed documentary SCREENAGERS on Thursday Nov. 30 at 7:00 PM at the Tupper Auditorium.
SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. Parents & Guardians are invited to bring their kids (aged 10+) and join us at the Charles Tupper Secondary Auditorium to screen the film and start a conversation about growing up in the digital age. Following the film, there will be time for questions and discussion, moderated by Rebecca Janke, Parenting consultant. Register to get your ticket here. Tickets are by donation at the door (Suggested donation $10/person). Book and come early, as these screenings often sell out! Hopefully the answers, or at least where to start, can be found through these sessions.

Details here: OCTOBER MEETING SAVE-THE-DATE: Thursday, October 19th at 7:00 PM in the Staff Room: 2017-18 PAC budget vote meeting ----- Some Details: * Usual meeting business * Voting in a new Member-at-Large * Quick update from sub-committee(s) * Budget discussion and vote which we will run as smoothly and quickly as possible. Budget vote information: Each year, the PAC is responsible for determining how the BC Gaming Grant moneys are distributed. We accept requests from teachers and staff (which always exceed the amount we have to work with by about double), put it all into a spreadsheet with a few options, and then we vote on the disbursement. This is a very important responsibility and it's vital that we have as many voices present as possible so we can get input and feedback from parents and have enough people present to count as a legal vote according to our Constitution. About a week before the meeting, you will be able to view the agenda here. The Langara School of Management will be conducting an information session for its undergraduate business programs.
When: Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 | 7 – 8 PM Where: Langara College, Building A, Room 122A To RSVP, email [email protected] by October 2nd, 2017. For more information, please visit www.langara.ca/lsm. Monday, July 3rd

From 7:00pm to 9:00pm on May 13th, four very accomplished science students (each receiving over $60,000 in scholarships to UBC or SFU) will be speaking at the Scholar Seminar, a university preparation seminar held in support of the Canadian Red Cross. They will each be sharing their experiences and offering advice spanning academics, extra-curriculars, and scholarships, as well as engaging in question and answer sessions afterwards. One of these students is Andy Zeng, the 2017 Gordon Shrum Gold Medal (SFU’s most prestigious undergraduate honour, recognizing one graduating student for excellence in academics and extracurriculars). In addition to being a Finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship, he has recently been offered over $400,000 in awards to attend MD/PhD programs at UBC and the University of Toronto. As this is a one-time event, we want to make sure we can impact as many students and families at your school as possible, and would be grateful if you could share this opportunity with your PAC members and anyone else who may be interested.
